My special guest Kristin Pierce joins me to discuss all the inner working of our bodies as athletes from mindset to injuries. Kristin is a self-awareness educator whose mission is to empower others to deconstruct the self-limiting beliefs that are keeping them small and stuck in order to rise to their potential, come alive, and impact the world.

Kristin does so by helping her clients and students learn to connect to their inner knowing, learn to listen and understand the messages from their bodies, and question their limits so they can create healing, growth, and change in their lives.

She is a MindScape instructor, an Advanced BodyTalk Practitioner, a Registered Massage Therapist, an award-winning children’s author, an entrepreneur, and an athlete.

Born and raised in Rosetown, SK, Kristin was an elite athlete who competed on the Saskatchewan provincial teams for volleyball and track and field when she was in high school. She received a bronze medal at provincials for shot put in 2003. She earned a Div II college scholarship to Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. After her third year of college, she was blindsided with a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, but came out the other side and is healthy and thriving. She plays competitive indoor and beach volleyball and swears her vertical is better at 37 than when she was in college.

In this episode I share those tools for success. How to go ALL IN on the areas and aspects of your life that you deem as important.
Attention Female Athletes...This one is for you. For most of my athletic career I had little to know knowledge of how my performance mindset would be impacted based on my monthly cycle. In this episode I speak with Long Game Fitness Owner, Katie Doerksen, on many aspects of the female development and how our cycles impact our physical and emotional characteristics throughout our training.

Not only does Katie share some of the knowledge she has been gaining throughout the years, but she also provides some useful tools to maximize your performance by doing the right things.

While Katie and I come from different sport backgrounds, we have a mutual admiration for the sport mindset and all it provides to us as skills in later life. This episode is a must listen for female athletes out there at any age looking to maximize their performance and understand themselves even more!

In this episode I share openly about my past struggles with my relationship with food. As someone who LOVES food and grew up world travelled - meals were more of a social experience in my childhood. This ultimately developed an unhealthy attachment away from the purpose of what food truly is for my body. When I started to recognize food as the fuel to serve my body - in which we are only given one of through our time on this planet, my perspective began to shift.

I started to recognize how certain foods, generated certain gains in my ability to excel in all areas of my life from fitness, to business and life in general. My journey has been one in which led me to areas of my life where I lacked confidence and didn't love the person I saw in the mirror - to now where I am proud and humbled by what my body can achieve. I share my recent experience in the elimination reset (Beef, water and salt) and the impacts I felt through energy, overall health etc.

Wayne brings his experience and knowledge in USA Hockey and Hockey Canada to this conversation. As a former USA Hockey League Scout Wayne has been able to build many relationships with NHL NCAA USHL NAHL CHL Junior A and the list goes on.

I have to say I already really appreciated Wayne in previous conversations with him and had always received amazing feedback about him from athletes, but having this conversation with him really gave me this level of respect and admiration for someone who truly wants what is best for our athletes not only in sport but life.

It is important to acknowledge that mental strength is not something we are born with, it isn't something we have or don't have...It is something we must work on developing and increasing our capacity to do the HARD things as athletes.

Athletes must change their perspective of failures and put attention and focus into that which they can control. These tips are all part of the areas we can work through on our mindset to ensure we give ourselves the greatest opportunity to thrive in life and sport.

I share my experience in the challenges I faced when all I could see in my performances were the mistakes and failures rather than the opportunities to improve. I explain how perfectionism drastically impacts our CONFIDENCE, which is the number one struggle I see in athletes nowadays.

This episode covers everything on perfectionism, from how it shows up and the signs of it, to tools we can utilize to shift our perspective and mindset. Often as perfectionists, we struggle with the fear of failure and judgment, minimizing our chances of taking those risks that are required to reach our highest potential.

Whether it was bouncing between activities and different sports, appointments or filling that white space in my calendar, I thought that taking that foot of the gas was weakness.

In this episode, I talk on my experience as a young kid always striving to achieve greatness, all the way into my adult life of not listening to my body when it was screaming at me to just rest. I share injuries that were a direct result of over doing it, and essentially my breakdown as a busy mom, trying to do all the things.

This episode talks about committing to doing those things which are in alignment with you and that will serve you, but also listening to your body and getting to know when rest is needed.

Episode 12 - Taking Back Control (with McKinley Nelson)

In this episode Bret bring elite female hockey player from University of PEI on the show to share her experiences through her sport.

McKinley was only 16 when we was thinking about hanging up the skates for good. She struggled with finding a place on her team in an environment where she could hit her potential. So she made a decision to take control of her own outcomes and went to play in a town that felt in alignment with the type of hockey that was important to her. Not only 4 games in and her season was cut short that year back in 2020-2021. But opportunity came knocking and her door to continue onward with post secondary and with hesitation she decided to continue in the game that she once loved.

Not only did she find that love of the sport again, but she doesn't have plans to hang up the skates yet. McKinley shows us how making the adjustments you need in your life and choosing a different path, can give you a second shot at the pursuit of your passion in your sport.

Paul Seaton, father of Bret Howe, joined her to discuss his achievements in his sport of waterskiing. Born and raising the the United Kingdom, Paul took a love to the sport of waterskiing and had an extremely successful career. Paul Seaton held records in his event for slalom, jumping, and tricks. Paul's achievements in the sport: five time overall British Champion, three time overall European Champion, numerous individual event titles along the way, breaking a slalom record and world jump record. He also participated in the Munich 1972 Olympic Games and held a Guiness Book of Records Title.

His waterskiing career ended in the jumping event, September 1975 at the World Water Ski Championships near London when upon landing, his leg hyper extended 45 degrees. At this time he was the favourite to win the jumping event and the combined overall.

This injury would ultimately end his waterskiing career, having his knee cap needing to be completely removed. He walked with a limp and increasing pain from 1975-2002, wearing away both hips to the point in which he needed two major surgeries; one knee replacement and both hips.

As his daughter, Bret was able to water the determination and grit to not only recover from this injury, but to slalom ski for enjoyment. She envisioned that this was the same GRIT and determination he skied with in his sport career days.

Paul went on to coach in the sport running a Water Ski School out of England. He coached Andy Mapple, who was regarded as one of the greatest slalom skiers of all time. Paul set an example of how to turn adversity into the greatest teacher.

While the injury abruptly ended his career at its height, he was determined to give back to the sport world in any way possible. From coaching waterskiing, to now leading the Brooks Bandits Junior "A" Hockey Organization's Board of Directors he continues to live by his life motto "Make A Difference."

What a candid conversation! I sat with Shann Minish - parent of a U18 AAA Female Hockey player, who is on the pursuit of her dreams to play at a Post Secondary level. We discuss the opportunities that have opened many doors for Brielle and how she grew up through the support and guidance of her parents. From Shann's perspective, we discuss how the relationship has evolved, and the support system necessary to guide the athletes from the sidelines. Shann unpacks some amazing advice for parents who may feel a sense of overwhelm or struggle in what steps to take.

This was a fun one!
